Radiolabs - University Industry Consortium

Radio communications laboratories

Radiolabs (University Industry Consortium-Radiocommunications Laboratories) is a nonprofit Research Consortium established in 2001. It is based in Rome.

It currently counts among its Consortium members three Academic Institutions – theUniversity of Rome “Tor Vergata,” theUniversity of Rome “Roma 3” and theUniversity of L’Aquila – and three Industrial Partners – Hitachi Rail STS S.p.A., Cegeka S.p.A. and Intecs Solution S.p.A.

The mission of Radiolabs is to contribute to Applied Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer in the emerging fields of ICT and its related applications.
More specifically, the application areas in which the Consortium counts most expertise are in the field of Telecommunications and related services, including Wireless systems, Via Satellite systems, systems for communications in rail and navigation, Internet services and New Media technologies. Main areas of interest are new Wireless technologies, Ambient Intelligence, Infomobility and “context based” services. The working method of Radiolabs is based on the continuous growth of experience carried out over time with the participation in various national and European projects of an innovative nature.

Finally, Radiolabs trains high-level technical personnel, helps young researchers by providing them with applicable support for their research activities, PhD activities of consortium Academic Institutions, and promotes the dissemination of results through conferences, workshops, and specialized publications.

Thanks to the close collaboration between Industrial Partners and Academic Institutions with a strong focus on research and innovation, Radiolabs represents a rare “joint team” experience that can bring together a wide range of high-level and complementary research experience to produce studies, projects, and prototype and patent developments.

With reference to industrial developments, Radiolabs is, in addition, involved in the design of new mobile ad-hoc network protocols and the development of Software Defined Radio platforms for the integration of wireless systems based on different standards (Stanag 4285, MIL-STD 188-110/B). Radiolabs is also involved in the development, implementation and testing of Waveforms according to the Software Communication Architecture (SCA) methodology for programmable radio platforms in the HF, VHF and UHF bands, participated in the development of a radiomobile terminal capable of ensuring operability in heterogeneous wireless networks (Wi-Fi – UMTS) and also studied the architecture for the service of providing time information from GALILEO satellites.

Radiolabs’ working method is based on the continuous growth of experience carried out over time through participation in various projects of an innovative nature.
