Customer: European Community – 6th Framework Program
Duration: 2006-2009
The Project
The Project SMS has begun on June 2006, with a time-span of 33 months.
The Project’s aim consists in designing innovative tools which allow creating new ICT services for mobile users, in such a simple way that it will be possible even for small companies and individuals to become generators and providers of services. In order to grant to mobile services the same success achieved by the Web based ones, they should be easy to find, easy to use, easy to make secure and confidential, and easy to implement. In fact, it is considered that one of the important factors in the success of the Web consists in the ease with which almost anyone can create a website, thus relying on the creativeness and ability of a wide range of people, and rapidly increasing the amount of information and services available for each user. The SMS service will provide connectivity independent from the operators and the technology platforms, just like the Web. However, unlike the Web, the proposed services will be targeted at specific classes of users, with specific needs and in specific places, and adapteed to specific contexts.
The technology employed for developing these services is already available. What is still lacking regards the standard tools which should meet the aforementioned requirements, and the large amount of small information providers that have substained the growth of the Web. The Project SMS aims at removing these barriers.
